The Alliance for Retail Choice (ARC, http://www.allianceforretailchoice.com) has released the ABACUS study conducted by DEFG showing that many states continue to make progress in adopting competitive retail electricity markets. ARC’s Baseline Assessment of Choice in the US (ABACUS) shows that New York and Texas were the clear leaders among states that have given customers the ability to choose their electricity supplier.
The ABACUS study found that residential consumers in Texas and New York have a choice of suppliers and a choice of products and services. Consumers can choose a contract period of one month to one, two or even three years to lock in today’s prices; they can select “green power” that is backed by production from renewable resources such a wind and solar energy; they can bundle appliance maintenance costs into the electricity bill.
