DESI Facts

Index Universe

The Distributed Energy Stock Index (DESI) is a portfolio of 42 stocks whose primary focus is alternative energy and technology solutions.

Segments

The DESI is organized into six segments.
  • Prime Movers and Project Development
  • Renewable Energy Technologies
  • Alternative Fuel and Fuel Cells
  • Demand Management, Metering and Controls
  • Power Quality and Storage
  • Enabling and End Use Technologies
Weighting Scheme

The DESI is a fundamental weighted index. The revenues from the four most recent quarters are collected for each DESI company. A company's weight is the share its annual revenue to the annual revenues of all DESI companies.

Segment Descriptions
  • Prime Movers and Project Development. Companies that manufacture engines, turbines, or similar machines and equipment that drive electric generators through a process that requires the combustion of traditional fossil fuels, such as diesel and natural gas. It also includes companies that develop small-scale generation projects that use fossil fuels.
  • Renewable Energy Technologies. Companies that manufacture generating and conversion technologies that allow energy to be derived from renewable sources of energy such as the sun, wind, moving water, geothermal and other natural processes.
  • Alternative Fuel and Fuel Cells. Companies that primarily manufacture non-traditional fuels such as hydrogen and bio fuels, and companies that manufacture fuel cells.
  • Demand Management, Metering and Controls. Companies that manufacture products to meter or measure, monitor and control the end use devices that consume energy, or the electric grid. Products that apply digital technology to energy delivery networks. These applications are commonly referred to as demand response, direct load control, advanced metering infrastructure, and “smart grid.”
  • Power Quality and Storage. Companies that manufacture energy storage devices and power reliability and quality equipment (e.g., batteries, flywheel storage, power management). This includes companies that manufacture devices that store energy through chemical, mechanical or other processes.
  • Enabling and End Use Technologies. Companies that manufacture energy efficient appliances and manufacturing processes, and companies that manufacture, supply and manage the inputs and outputs employed by other DESI segments.  These include fuel delivery and emissions control technologies, manufacturing equipment used by other segments, and materials used in the production processes of other segments.
